During the slow floral season, it is easy to lose motivation, especially when things seem so uncertain. Perhaps you are facing client cancellations, you have had to furlough your staff, blooms are limited for purchase due to the market, or you are just having difficulty getting your business off the ground.

One of the most beautiful things about life is the opportunity to overcome obstacles as they come. Life calls for us to keep going. Below are five tips for getting back on track when you lose motivation.

Tip #1: Make a list of the things that bring YOU joy

Self-care is crucial when your job tends to focus on caring for others. It’s common for florists and designers to get so busy bringing others joy that their own happiness gets lost in the shuffle.

Try to do something that makes your soul smile at least three times a week to give you the fuel to face life and all of its circumstances. Read a book, go for a walk, binge watch a show on TV, or pick up a new hobby. Whatever you do, do something that will bring a smile to your face and calm to your life. You deserve happiness; make it happen!

Tip #2: Set boundaries for yourself and others

It can be challenging to develop solutions or accomplish goals when trying to take everything on at once. Set realistic daily goals when planning your day and focus on them.

Set boundaries with your clients through your email signature. Use it to set your business hours and designate which of them are design hours and office hours. This will help clients know when to make phone calls, send emails, and expect return calls and emails.

As interruptions occur within your day and circumstances arise, triage them in order of value and importance. If they can wait, come back to them when you have a free moment. Train yourself to set these types of boundaries so that you don’t get easily overwhelmed.

Tip #3: Schedule time for social media

Set your intentions and work within your social media goals. Plan your time on social media each day and determine what you want to accomplish while using it.

Begin by keeping it light until you’re ready to take in more. Ease yourself into it by making it fun. Hashtag search floral design inspiration and motivational quotes. Enjoy laughing at memes or catching up on celebrity gossip.

Tip #4: Focus on the reasons you began this journey and keep it positive

Overwhelming negative thoughts can be the biggest distraction when trying to gain motivation in your business. Even when things seem bleak, there is still goodness in the world to celebrate. Find time to tune out all of the noise and focus on these things, whether it be in the evening before bedtime or first thing in the morning.

Think about what called you to flowers, to your business, to your dreams, to your goals. Think about the things you have accomplished, no matter how big or small. Celebrate your victories. Reflect on how you felt in those victorious moments and reignite that fire. Keep those feelings close to your heart and take the first step toward your new goals.

Tip #5: Watch the flowers

There are many life lessons in flowers that teach us how to endure discomfort before we can bloom or be restored—like hydrangeas being rejuvenated by being dunked in water.

Those working in the floral industry know firsthand how flowers grow from the dirt into something beautiful.

Designers can take buckets of blooms and transform entire spaces into beautiful experiences for others. With the same spirit of diligence and dedication put into designing beautiful events for others, take time to redirect that positive energy into yourself. You are worth it.

Life is full of surprises; that’s what makes it an incredible journey. When feeling discouraged, use these tips as a nudge to help you become rejuvenated. You are amazing and bring so much value to this world. Keep going!
