This week, we’re sharing a free video about amending soil and growing snapdragons from one of my American farmers, Lee of Goldenrod Gardens! Lee has been working with me for several years, providing amazing plants for my wedding work. She’s introduced me to so many fantastic plants and has shared so much of her farming knowledge with me. Each time she pops over to drop off flowers in the cooler we take a quick look at my seedlings and she helps out by sharing her wisdom: These need magnesium, add some lime over here, neem oil for these bugs. I’m so thankful for her.
Tips for Amending Soil and Growing SnapdragonS
The ideal soil for growing snapdragons is well-drained, not too rocky, slightly acidic, free of weed seed infestation, and high in phosphorus. Adding chicken manure and bone meal to your soil helps stabilize the phosphorus content and produce strong stems, big flowers, and an overall healthy plant. Flower-tone and azomite additions set you up for ultimate success.
Using conduit, rebar, and square plant netting, you can lay out a planting grid that can be raised as the snapdragons grow to hold plants at their height. Use hoops, rocks, or zip ties to secure the netting in place against the wind and elements.

Properly balancing the phosphorous, nitrogen, and potassium content of your soil is critical to snapdragon growing success.
Creating a netting structure to measure appropriate distance between plants (eight inches apart) and support stems as they grow helps too.
