Video: Creating a Sculptural Floral Arrangement Step by Step

In this sculptural floral arrangement, you'll see a nice cross-section of many varieties of flowers including gomphrena, zinnias, foxglove, pokeweed, asiatic lilies, hydrangea, and dahlias! Start the floral centerpiece structure with pokeweed stuck into a vessel using a flower frog in the basin. Layer in the geranium leaf and other framing leaves around the base of the vessel. Add in a few clumps of hydrangea for color placement, and transition from pinks into peachier tones with foxglove, adding height at the same time.

Create a line using zinnias or ranunculus, staying mindful of the size, shape, and shade as well as how these elements interact with what’s already present. Layer focal flowers (such as dahlias) in one at a time, clustering in key places along the line you’ve created with the zinnias.

You can also add in even larger, more richly colored asiatic lilies for a big dramatic color pop and bloom shape variance, which adds interest! Layer in both low and up higher to see if you like the height. Finish with some gomphrena to create some height without causing imbalance to the weight on the opposite side of the arrangement from the high lilies.

Key Points:

  • Start with an element like pokeweed that can outline the arrangement’s shape.

  • Fill in with a base cover like hydrangea to lend structure and stability.

  • Use a draping or framing leaf like geranium to cover the edge of the vessel.

  • Create an implied line using medium-sized blooms like zinnias and emphasize key points with focal flowers such as dahlias.

  • Finish with color or texture pops such as asiatic lilies and gomphrena.
