3 Tips for Creating a Holiday Pop-Up Shop

Holidays bring so much joy to people's lives. It is no wonder that so many holiday gifts—for Mother's Day, Easter, Anniversaries, Christmas, etc.—include flowers.

Flowers bring joy in the same way that Santa brings cheer to small children. The best part is that we can create an excellent profit stream from these holidays by selling small (or large) bundles of blooms to our clients! Today, let's dive into three tips for creating a pop-up shop for any holiday.

Tip #1: Preplan the Logistics

Before marketing any of your brilliant ideas, think through your plan and decide on your constraints. Here are a few questions to help you get started.

  • How many orders can you handle?

  • Will you offer delivery to a specific area? If so, what rate will you charge for delivery?

  • Will you offer different size designs or stick to one product?

  • How many stems will you include in each arrangement?

  • Where will you sell from?

  • How many hours/days will you offer flowers?

When advertising, you want to be able to outline the expectations and ideas of your pop-up shop as clearly as possible.

Tip #2: Join with Other Small Businesses for Your Pop-Up

Your subscribers, clients, and friends need to know this about your plan: what, when, where, and how. What better way to spread the word than by utilizing your network around you?

Ask your favorite local bartending company to supply DIY Mimosas with fresh-pressed juices or your favorite cookie baker to design a specialty cookie to pair with your flowers. By teaming up with others, you not only create community, but you also support another small business. Bonus: The giver does not have to choose between your beautiful flowers and those tasty cookies. They can get both for a reasonable price.

Pair up your items into a basket, ask a photographer friend to get some great shots of the product, and then you are ready to advertise. Social media, specifically Instagram, has brought the most business for our pop-up shops. Be sure to tag each vendor that assisted you with the project. This will attract their clientele and create credibility.

Tip #3: Source Smart and Have Fun!

When ordering flowers for pop-up shops, let go and enjoy the design. Select a percentage of the cost you will spend on your flowers and supplies (i.e., 45% of the total cost will go to supplies and flowers). Then send your favorite wholesaler your budget and the number of stems needed. Let them do the rest.

This will allow you to work with new blooms and be free to be creative. Get crazy, get creative, and enjoy creating instead of using a recipe to create an exact design. By sending your wholesaler your overall cost and number of stems needed, you will be able to stay on budget, make money, and be creative all at the same time!

Remember, flowers bring happiness and smiles, so don't let this endeavor become a burden. I'm confident that if you preplan your logistics, make your presence known, and source blooms from a supplier you trust, you'll enjoy this pop-up just as much as your consumer!
