Video: Design Foundations of a Wedding Centerpiece

Video: Design Foundations of a Wedding Centerpiece

What are the three levels of a floral arrangement—and why should we be thinking about them as we design wedding centerpieces?

In this video, I’ll walk you through the design principles of balance, shape, and rest and how I use them to guide every piece I create. These three principles are the building blocks that lead to efficiency, balance, and freedom in your design work!

This video is one of a three-part series, and it’s both a great place to start if you are new to floral design or flower arranging and also if you are feeling stuck in a design rut. You’ll see the process of designing centerpieces with new eyes and receive a breath of fresh air regarding the creative process.

Floral Design Principles Covered

Here are the floral design principles that are covered in this video.

  • Balance—shape and size, proportions, often with foliage

  • Movement—implied lines, moving the eye through the arrangement, creating space for the large flowers to rest

  • Rest—gives our eye a place to take a break
